This charming 15cm Wedgwood jasperware vase is a miniature interpretation of the celebrated Portland Vase, executed in the firm’s classic mid-blue and white colourway. Produced in England and impressed to the base with the standard WEDGWOOD and MADE IN ENGLAND marks, it typifies the refined neo-classical taste that has defined Wedgwood since the late 18th century. The piece is crafted in solid blue jasper with applied white reliefs and displays the silky, matt surface for which this body is renowned.

The body is ovoid and rises to a waisted neck and flared lip, supported by a narrow, slightly raised foot ring. Two opposed loop handles spring from the shoulder to the neck; each handle is moulded with subtle twist detailing that adds visual interest without distracting from the main decoration. The interior and the underside show the characteristic pale biscuit colour of unglazed jasper, confirming that this is not a glazed stoneware or porcelain copy but a genuine jasperware example.

A continuous frieze of crisply modelled white reliefs encircles the vase, taking inspiration from the mythological figures on the original Roman glass Portland Vase. Classical male and female figures recline on rocky outcrops and low plinths beneath stylised trees, while putti or winged cherubs hover among the branches. Ruined architectural elements, including broken columns and an entablature, evoke an antique landscape and reinforce the neo-classical theme. The modelling is sharp and well-defined, particularly in the folds of the drapery, the leafage of the trees and the expressive poses of the figures, all of which point to Wedgwood’s high production standards.

Between the handles, applied masks of bearded satyrs or river gods hang beneath the handle terminals, another deliberate echo of ancient Roman and Greek decorative metalwork. The composition is carefully balanced so that whichever side is displayed, the viewer is presented with a complete narrative scene. The ornamental reliefs adhere cleanly to the ground, with no signs of later restoration or overpainting visible in the photographs.

Condition, as noted, is good throughout. The matt blue ground appears even in colour with only slight, honest surface rubbing consistent with age and gentle handling. The white reliefs remain bright, with just minor age-related toning in protected areas, which collectors generally regard as desirable patina. The rim and foot show no obvious chips or cracks; the underside retains some kiln and shelf marks but nothing that detracts from display. Overall the vase presents beautifully and is ready for cabinet or shelf.

Standing at approximately 15cm high, this is a very displayable size: substantial enough to showcase the classical decoration yet compact enough for a mantelpiece, bookcase or mixed grouping of jasperware. While it references the celebrated Portland Vase, the twin-handled form, applied satyr masks and arrangement of figures place it in Wedgwood’s wider range of neo-classical revival shapes, making it an attractive companion piece to other blue and white jasper items such as spill vases, urns or covered jars.

For collectors of Wedgwood or enthusiasts of classical revival ceramics, this miniature Portland Vase style piece offers an excellent opportunity to acquire an authentic English jasperware vase with strong decorative presence, clear factory marks and appealing condition. It would sit equally well in a focused Wedgwood collection or as a single statement accent in a period or modern interior, where its deep blue ground and sculptural white reliefs provide an immediate focal point.
