This striking Wedgwood figurine was produced as an official commemorative piece for the London 2012 Olympic Games, celebrating the Games of the 30th Olympiad. Modelled in the classical Wedgwood tradition, the sculpture depicts a nude male torchbearer striding forward with arm outstretched, holding the Olympic torch aloft. The design recalls ancient Greek statuary and links the modern Games with their classical origins, making this an especially appealing piece for both Olympic and ceramics collectors.

The figure is crafted in a fine matt black stoneware body, reminiscent of Wedgwood’s famous basalt, with the flame of the torch picked out in a rich metallic gold. This restrained palette of black and gold gives the piece a dignified, sculptural presence and allows the strong modelling of the anatomy and drapery to stand out clearly. At the side of the figure is a broken classical column, which acts as both a visual counterbalance and a further reference to the architecture of the ancient Olympic arenas.

The rectangular base is inscribed on the front in gilt script with the legend “Games of the 30th Olympiad” alongside the official London 2012 emblem, confirming its status as a fully licensed Olympic product. To the reverse of the base is the sculptor’s impressed signature, and the underside carries the Wedgwood W mark together with the printed legend © LOCOG 2007–2010, “Official Product of London 2012”. These markings authenticate the figurine as a genuine Wedgwood issue produced under licence from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.

The figurine stands approximately 11.5 inches (about 29 cm) high to the tip of the torch, giving it an impressive display presence without overwhelming a mantelpiece, bookcase or display cabinet. The matt stoneware surface has the characteristic velvety feel associated with high-quality Wedgwood decorative wares. The detailing of the hair, facial features, musculature and toes is crisp and well defined, reflecting Wedgwood’s long experience in producing neoclassical sculpture in ceramic form.

Condition is very good with no chips, cracks or structural damage observed. Under close inspection there are some light surface marks and a little minor rubbing to the matt finish and gilding commensurate with careful display and handling, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The piece stands true and stable, and the gold lettering to the base remains clear and legible.

This Wedgwood London 2012 torchbearer figurine is ideal for collectors of Olympic memorabilia, fans of British design, and lovers of Wedgwood’s neoclassical style. It works equally well as a stand‑alone display piece or as part of a broader collection of commemorative ceramics, sports collectibles or modern interpretations of classical sculpture. With its official London 2012 provenance, quality of manufacture and timeless subject matter, it offers a highly decorative yet historically resonant reminder of the Games of the 30th Olympiad held in London.
