An original Second World War MI9 silk escape and evasion map of southern Italy and Sicily, sheet J4, scale 1:1,378,000, with roads in red, railways and towns in black and the kilometre scale bar.

These maps, printed on silk so that they would not rustle or rot, were issued to RAF aircrew and special forces to sew into clothing; the Italy series was carried in the 1943 Sicilian and Italian campaigns. The reverse (not visible as framed) carries the companion sheet of northern Italy and the Swiss frontier.

Presented in a wooden frame with a cream mount, behind glass. Overall size approx 64 x 57 cm.

Condition: folds as issued; minor staining to the silk, as shown in the photographs, which may respond to careful cleaning. Please see all photographs.
